I started out in medicine as a registered nurse in 1985. I loved my fast-paced life in the critical care world, working with patients in the intensive care unit and really connecting with them and their families. I found I was good at helping those who were in crisis. However, I also found that people were slipping between the cracks with all of the various medical "specialties" and "specialists."
Gradually, I began focusing more on end-of-life care and helping people transition to the next level. This was deeply gratifying: to bring together my patients’ spirituality, emotional lives, mental processes, and physical needs within the context of their beliefs, families, and values—within their life stories. This, I knew, was good medicine. This was caring for and treating the whole person. Why couldn’t this kind of medicine be practiced at the beginning of life? Why not throughout life? Why did a person have to get a terminal illness before they got really outstanding healthcare that focused on every area of their being? These were the questions I asked myself.
My Personal Crisis
It was just at that time that I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), an “incurable autoimmune disease.” I felt trapped and betrayed by my own body. I then felt trapped by my medical system when I was presented with the standard immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory drugs as my only options. I was told that diet and stress levels had nothing to do with my disease. Mainstream medicine offered me no hope. I was facing a lifetime of debilitating drugs, and, like my grandfather who had suffered from RA also, a lifetime of pain and suffering. Had I been trapped by my genetics too?
I examined my body, mind, heart, and spirit for clues to my disease. In the process of my research and inquiry into the “WHY” of my disease, I discovered Ayurveda. Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient science that encompasses all of these aspects of health: body, mind, heart, spirit, and story.
Within one year of changing lifestyle habits from each of the four areas of my WHOLE being, I was free of autoimmunity. Tests could find was no sign of RA in my blood. According to Western medicine, this was impossible. I discovered I had only been trapped by my lifestyle choices and how they impacted my genetics.
The Birth of the Freedom Framework
Shortly thereafter, I discovered Functional Medicine and realized this was a model that took the precepts of Ayurveda and translated them into Western language for the modern person. Ever since, I have been using what I now call the Freedom Framework to find and fix the root causes of blocks in my patients’ physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual energy—while listening to their stories.
Because a person’s story is so important, and because many of the blocks to vital energy begin in life experiences that are then assigned beliefs and behaviors, I also became educated as a psychotherapist. I was seeing hundreds of women who were coming into my clinic with fatigue, weight issues, digestive imbalances, hormone/adrenal/thyroid problems, autoimmunity, and low sex drive.
Today, I can happily report that the 4 Pillar Freedom Framework method I use to help women navigate through the 5 root causes of and dis-ease is lighting them up.
Women who come in feeling fat, frazzled, fatigued, and fried are leaving empowered, transformed, and feeling fabulous. Not only that, but they are finally making friends with the woman they see in the mirror.
This is NOT an overnight process. I am famous for saying, “this method does not just turn on your vitality with the flip of a switch.” It’s a multi-layered process that must be personalized to fit the individual story of each and every woman. But if you are ready to make the lifestyle changes necessary to reverse your current wellness trajectory, I am here to help you!
