Over the past few years, I’ve seen a meaningful shift in how people approach their health. More patients are taking initiative—ordering advanced laboratory testing on their own and arriving at my office informed, curious, and motivated. One platform I’m asked about often is Function Health, which offers an impressively broad panel of biomarkers—sometimes more than 160—spanning metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, hormones, inflammation, nutrient status, and organ function.
When patients walk in with these reports, I genuinely appreciate the step they’ve taken. It tells me they care about understanding their bodies and investing in their long-term wellbeing.
And yet, almost every one of them asks the same question:
“I have all this information… now what do I do with it?”
Information Without Context Can Be Overwhelming
As someone who practices functional, integrative, and holistic medicine, I encounter this scenario weekly. Patients are empowered by access to data—but also confused, uncertain, and sometimes anxious. They’ve done the testing, but they’re left alone to interpret it.
Function Health does a very good job of making advanced labs accessible. For many people, this is the most comprehensive snapshot of their physiology they’ve ever seen—far more detailed than what is typically ordered at an annual physical. That level of insight can be empowering.
It can also be overwhelming.
What I hear from patients isn’t disappointment with the testing. It’s frustration with what comes after. The reports flag results as “high” or “low” and provide general explanations, but there’s no personal relationship with a clinician who knows you—your history, medications, stressors, symptoms, or goals.
That’s usually where people get stuck.
Because data alone can’t tell you:
- Which findings matter most for you
- Which results reflect temporary adaptations versus true dysfunction
- How different systems are influencing one another
- What to address now and what can wait
Those distinctions require clinical judgment, experience, and context.
Why Interpreting Labs Is More Than Reading Numbers
When I review lab work, I’m not simply asking whether a value falls inside or outside a reference range. I’m asking why it looks the way it does in your body, at this stage of your life.
I’m considering questions like:
- How does this align with your symptoms?
- How might your medications or supplements be influencing these results?
- Are there patterns across blood sugar, hormones, inflammation, and stress physiology that tell a larger story?
- What changes will truly support how you want to feel and function as you age?
Algorithms are very good at flagging data. What they cannot do is weigh context, recognize subtle patterns shaped by years of clinical experience, or help someone decide what actually matters right now.
Turning Function Health Labs Into a Meaningful Plan
In my practice, we regularly work with patients who bring in extensive lab results from Function Health and similar platforms. Our role is to help that information make sense—and to translate it into something actionable.
Here’s how we approach that work.
Comprehensive, Human Interpretation
We review your labs within the context of your whole life—your health history, lifestyle, stress, sleep, nutrition, and medications. This allows us to identify meaningful patterns rather than reacting to isolated numbers.
Root-Cause–Focused Thinking
Instead of chasing labs, we ask deeper questions. Why is inflammation elevated? Why are hormones shifting? Why is energy low despite “normal” results? This approach supports long-term health, not just short-term correction.
Personalized Treatment Planning
From there, we create a plan designed specifically for you. That may include nutrition and lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, hormone support, medication review, or strategies to improve sleep and stress resilience. Every recommendation is grounded in what fits your life and goals.
Education, Guidance, and Follow-Through
One of the most important parts of my work is helping patients understand why changes are being recommended. When you understand the reasoning, you’re more confident—and far more successful—in following through.
This Is Not About Perfect Labs
I often remind patients that our goal is not to chase “perfect” numbers on a page. Our goal is to improve how you feel, how you function, and how well your body supports you over time.
Lab data is a starting point. True transformation comes from:
- Clear interpretation
- Smart prioritization
- Consistent follow-through
- Ongoing adjustment as your body responds
The patients who do best are those who value partnership—who want to be engaged in the process and appreciate having a physician walk alongside them.
The Missing Piece Is Often Guidance
If you’ve invested in advanced lab testing and feel unsure about what comes next, you haven’t failed anything. You’ve simply reached the point where personalized care becomes essential.
My role is to help you turn information into understanding—and understanding into a plan that genuinely improves your quality of life. When data is combined with clinical insight, experience, and human connection, it becomes a powerful tool for long-term health.
