Recently, I have had a couple of experiences that have brought the increasing polarization within the United States to my attention–again–and the need to heal the polarization.
Last month I came under attack on my Facebook professional page from an organized hate group of volatile medical doctors who demonstrated little concern for actual facts or science. Seems an oxymoron, right? The very same week, I realized that the TED X talk I was set to deliver shortly was being heavily censored by the hosting committee. I have found myself struggling as I work to break through the latest layer of growth I am encountering. Like a chick working to break through the hard shell of the egg; like a butterfly taking those first tentative wing flutters after escaping from the cocoon covered in heavy mucous; like the birth of a baby; like a woman entering menopause… when it all falls apart, it’s messy and it’s difficult, and I want to just sit in a comfortable chair and read a good book and hope it’s over by the time I turn the last page. This week I had the opportunity to see Mean Girls the Musical in New York City. Because I love anything Tina Fey does, I fully expected to like it. I was wrong; I LOVED it. It contained the themes from her blockbuster movie of the same name: human sexuality, bullying, hierarchical structures of the animal kingdom, and the possibility that people can change.
